How do I get a DIN number?

A Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique identification number allotted to individuals who wish to become directors or existing directors of registered companies in India. Obtaining a DIN number is an essential requirement for corporate governance. In this article, we will guide you through the process of acquiring a DIN number in a simple and straightforward manner.

  1. Understand the Basics of DIN: Before diving into the process of obtaining a DIN number, it's important to understand what it entails. A DIN number is a unique, eight-digit identification number that acts as an identifier for directors. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) in India is responsible for issuing DIN numbers. It helps maintain a database of directors and ensures transparency and accountability in corporate operations.
  2. Eligibility Criteria: To obtain a DIN number, you must meet certain eligibility criteria. Any individual, whether an Indian citizen or a foreign national, who intends to be a director in an Indian company is required to have a DIN. However, certain individuals, such as government officials and persons declared as insolvent, are not eligible to obtain a DIN. Additionally, it's important to note that each individual can have only one DIN.
  3. Document Preparation: To initiate the process of obtaining a DIN number, you need to gather the necessary documents. These typically include proof of identity, proof of address, and passport-sized photographs. Commonly accepted identification documents include PAN card, Aadhaar card, voter ID, passport, or driver's license. It is essential to ensure that all the documents are accurate, up to date, and meet the specified requirements outlined by the MCA.
  4. Filing the DIN Application: Once you have gathered the required documents, you can proceed with filing the DIN application. The MCA provides an eForm called the "eForm DIR-3" for this purpose. You need to fill in the necessary details accurately, including personal information, contact details, and educational qualifications. Additionally,Photograph, identity proof and residence proof must be attested by a Chartered Accountant or a Company Secretary or a Cost Accountant, in whole-time practice. After completing the form, make sure to review all the information carefully before submitting it.

After uploading DIR-3 and the supporting documents, the applicant will pay the fee in the next window screen. It has to be paid through net banking, credit card or NEFT. Manual(offline) payment is not allowed.

Once the application fee is paid and the application is submitted, the system will generate an application number. Central Government will process the application and decide the approval/ rejection.

If the DIN application is approved, the central government will communicate the DIN to the applicant within 1 month.

Obtaining a DIN number is a crucial step for individuals aspiring to be directors in Indian companies. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can ensure a smooth and hassle-free process. Remember to provide accurate information, gather the necessary documents, and complete the application carefully to increase the chances of obtaining your DIN number successfully.
